Elizabeth Eckford, 1957 Elizabeth Eckford, daughter of Oscar and Birdie Eckford, was one of six children. On September 4, 1957 she was the only one of the Nine to try to enter Central High School. Daisy Bates of the NAACP called everyone to let them know to meet a few blocks away from the school, so they could enter together. Eckford did not have a phone and did not get the message. She was turned away by the Arkansas National Guard to face an angry white mob threatening to lynch her.Elizabeth Eckford, 1997 Hazel Bryan Massery, one of the rabid hecklers, apologized to Eckford 35 years later, but so far she has been the only white person in Little Rock to publicly say she's sorry. Eckford, a retired journalist, has received a number of awards, and is the only one of the Nine to call Little Rock her home.
